Gran Turismo™
Gran Turismo launched in Japan in December 1997 and was an instant hit with gamers around the world. The game allowed players to get behind the wheel of a large number of real cars. Each car handled uniquely with realistic quality providing a revolutionary experience for gamers and attracting racing enthusiasts. Gran Turismo was created by game developer and automotive enthusiast Kazunori Yamauchi working for SCEI.
Gran Turismo™ 2
In 1998 Kazunori Yamauchi went on to create Polyphony Digital, a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment and a software developer entity. In 1999 Gran Turismo 2 was released reaching a new bench mark with a abundance of new vehicles and tracks.
Gran Turismo™ 3
Making the leap to PLAYSTATION 2 in 2001, Gran Turismo 3 harnessed all the power of the new console. The graphics were awe-inspiring with cars reaching near-photorealistic quality. Up to 5000 polygons were used per car, 10 times the number used in GT2.
Gran Turismo™ 4
With the launch of Gran Turismo 4 in 2004, a new standard was set for authentic racing action with more than 700 cars and over 50 tracks encompassing 80 real auto manufacturers and various real-life courses from around the world, as well as realistic driving physics and various new game modes.
Gran Turismo™ HD
Gran Turismo HD was launched in March 2007 as an exclusive free download via the PLAYSTATION Network, providing a glimpse of the next stage in the iconic motoring title's evolution. Players started with one car on the Eiger Nordwand track in the Swiss Alps and raced to unlock 9 more cars, including a Ferrari 599 – the first time a Ferrari has appeared in Gran Turismo. In another first, Gran Turismo HD Concept’s Time Trial brought into effect the first Gran Turismo online rankings system.
